Tooth Extraction

In a perfect world, teeth would last a lifetime. They’re stronger than you might think, but they’re no match for oral problems like advanced decay or gum disease.

As general dentists, Dr. Andriy Krayniy and Dr. Rosemarie Zimmerman provide all the services you need to preserve your teeth for as long as possible. But sometimes situations occur where the healthiest and safest option is to remove them.

Why We Recommend Tooth Extraction

Every one of your teeth serves a specific function, so preserving their structure is essential. But in the case of an unrepairable tooth or one that is threatening surrounding teeth, we would recommend tooth extraction at our Midtown Manhattan dental office.

Common reasons for tooth extraction are:

  • Tooth decay is too advanced to be treated with a filling or dental crown.
  • A tooth infection or abscess is so severe that a root canal won’t save it.
  • Advanced gum disease has loosened a tooth, so we must remove it.
  • Dental trauma has broken off a tooth below the gum line.
  • Wisdom teeth that cause crowding put neighboring teeth at risk.

Dr. Krayniy may also recommend tooth extraction to prepare for a dental implant or denture placement.

Your Comfort Is Our Priority

The last thing most people want to hear is that they need a tooth extraction. Our dentists in NYC understand your feelings about this, and we do our best to make sure that your procedure is as straightforward and stress-free as possible.

Dr. Krayniy has over 20 years of experience in providing his patients with treatment that is tailored for their unique needs. He is a caring dentist, and our patients appreciate his gentle approach and calm demeanor. With a procedure like a tooth extraction, these qualities help ensure that you will have the most comfortable, stress-free procedure possible.

What to Expect During Tooth Extraction

The first step is to make sure you’re settled in your chair and comfortable. If you would like something to take the edge off of your anxiety, we are pleased to offer nitrous oxide or “laughing gas.” You’ll feel pleasantly drowsy and calm during your procedure, but you’ll be fully conscious so that we can communicate with each other.

Dr. Krayniy uses powerful anesthetics to numb the tooth so that you don’t feel any pain. Using a slight rocking motion, he will gradually loosen the tooth and remove it.

Post-Treatment Care at Home

After the extraction, we will place a folded gauze pad on the site to control bleeding. Continue to bite down on the pad for about an hour after your procedure, then replace it with a clean one.

Plan to take the rest of the day off to let your body heal and follow our instructions for post-treatment care at home. It is crucial to care for you to protect the extraction site exactly as instructed to prevent a very painful complication called dry socket.

If you feel lingering discomfort, over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen are usually all that’s needed for relief. As always, if you encounter any problems or have concerns after you get home, don’t hesitate to call so we can help you.
